Since the year 2000, a compiled count of cable car, aerial ropeway and related lift accidents indicates that at least 222 people have died worldwide. Behind every statistic is a real person—and a warning that these systems are not without risk.
Now consider the proposed Springbrook Cableway.
Springbrook Mountain is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia—a remote, environmentally sensitive landscape known for extreme weather, dense cloud and fog, powerful winds, severe storms, lightning, steep terrain, landslides, falling trees, bushfire risk, difficult emergency access and prolonged power outages.
This is absolutely the wrong place to gamble with mass-tourism cableway infrastructure.
What happens during an evacuation in extreme weather? What happens when visibility disappears into cloud? When trees fall? When power fails? When fire threatens? When high winds strike exposed infrastructure? And what happens when hundreds of thousands of additional visitors are funnelled into a fragile World Heritage landscape?
Springbrook is not a theme park. It is an ancient living ecosystem containing rare and threatened wildlife, precious water catchments and irreplaceable Gondwanan rainforest.
Before irreversible decisions are made, the public deserves independent safety assessments, transparent environmental impact studies, genuine community consultation and full disclosure of the risks.
